Acetic Acid 90% is a concentrated aqueous solution of acetic acid for professional cosmetic and personal care formulation. It is particularly useful where controlled acidification or pH adjustment is required, including shampoos, hair and scalp products, body washes and other aqueous cleansing formulations.

Acetic acid is recognised as a cosmetic ingredient with a buffering function, helping formulators alter or maintain the pH of a formulation at the desired level. Its liquid form also makes it readily incorporated into aqueous systems.

Our Acetic Acid 90% is produced by dilution of chemically pure acetic acid conforming to the standards of JECFA 63.

Hair Care Applications

Acetic acid is particularly useful in hair-care development where an acidic final pH is required. It can be used to adjust the pH of shampoos, conditioners, clarifying products and other specialist hair formulations.

Because the required quantity depends on the composition and buffering capacity of the complete formulation, acetic acid should be added according to measured final pH rather than by a fixed percentage.

Use in Preservation Systems

Acetic acid may also be used to establish or maintain an acidic formulation environment. This can be useful when working with preservation systems whose effectiveness depends upon the finished product remaining within a particular pH range.

Acetic Acid 90% should not, however, be regarded as a substitute for an appropriately selected and validated broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative system.

Working With Acetic Acid 90%

This product is highly concentrated and should not be confused with household vinegar.

For small-scale formulation and routine pH adjustment, formulators may find it more convenient to prepare a lower-concentration working solution rather than repeatedly handling the 90% concentrate.

Always add acid gradually and verify the pH of the finished formulation using an appropriately calibrated pH meter.

When diluting concentrated acetic acid, always add the acid carefully to the water rather than adding water to the concentrated acid. Appropriate personal protective equipment and chemical-handling procedures should be used.

Suggested Usage

Use as required to achieve the target pH of the finished formulation.

There is no universal usage percentage for pH adjustment. The amount required will depend on the starting pH, formulation composition and buffering capacity of the product.

For greater dosing control during small-scale development, a suitably diluted working solution may be prepared before use.

Storage

Store tightly closed in the original or other suitably compatible container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible materials, heat and ignition sources.
